How’s The Ed Show Is Doing Upon Its Return To Weekdays?

MSNBC’s The Ed Show has had a rough year.

On March 13th, Ed Schultz announced that his show was moving to weekends; his time slot would be given to Chris Hayes. Ed abruptly left the air the next day after his show. Then, for several weeks, there was no news at all. Many of us wondered if Ed was off the air for good, with nobody wanting to say so.  Finally, nearly 2 months later, Ed returned to the air on May 11 to begin his weekend run.  He was given the 5pm slot, a time traditionally filled by the “Mr. Hyde” portion of MSNBC’s split personality (the news shows playing the role of Dr. Jekyll).

It seemed Ed was destined to remain on the weekends, but once again MSNBC spun the wheel, and Ed returned to the weekdays, this time at 5pm, with his first show on August 26.  With the proviso that it’s only been a few weeks in the new slot, and that the labor day weekend happened right in the middle of his return so far, let’s take a look at how Ed’s been doing.

Cable News Ratings for 2013-09-13…

Happy Friday the 13th!

It was Gretchen Carlson’s last day on Fox and Friends, with Elisabeth Hasselbeck coming in to replace Gretchen on Monday.  But even Gretchen’s departure couldn’t stir the tweets of the needs a second cup of coffee crowd on Fox.  Morning Joe, whose audience presumably has faithfully visited their Starbucks barista early in the morning, was able to get much higher engagement from Twitter.

CNN’s new Crossfire seems to have done pretty well, especially when you include mentions of any of the 4 hosts’ accounts.

But the champs of the day, as frequently the case, are MSNBC’s Ed Schultz with the most mentions during a show, and CNN’s Piers Morgan, with the most mentions overall during the day.  I really think the two of them would make an awesome reboot of “the odd couple”.

Twitter Cable News Ratings for 2013-09-11 …

  • Best engagement during their live broadcast: The Ed Show.  My wife texted me a screen grab, noticing the live display of tweets behind Ed.  Whoever you are on Ed’s team who does social media, you’re doin’ it right.
  • Best engagement throughout the day: Hannity, followed by Morning Joe.  It helps to either (a) have a radio show or (b) be on the air for several hours.  I may want to look more closely at the distribution of tweets during the radio show vs. TV show to fine tune this.
  • Most puzzling: Piers Morgan dropped like a rocket.
  • Rut-Roh: Crossfire seems to be losing engagement.  Let’s see if this is a trend or a fluke.

Sadly, I was on the road today and didn’t get to catch the coverage.  My wife tells me there was quite a bit of 9/11 coverage, and I wonder if that affected the Twitter mentions.

Here are the counts of Twitter mentions for the day:

Here are the Twitter Cable News Mention Counts for 2013-09-10.

Once again, Piers Morgan is the champion of social media…and Crossfire is doing great for only being on the air for 30 minutes.

As always, read the note at the end of the post.  And the programs behind this are still a work-in-progress, so if you see something odd, let me know!
