CNNi and Kelly win Cable News Twitter for Thursday, October 9, 2014

CNN’s picking up … internationally. Thursday saw The Kelly File win best hour, and CNN International win best day.  It’s probably safe to say that a lot of CNNi’s traffic was not domestic, but it’s hard to say (less than 2% of all tweets have any geographical information with them, which should make you always suspect any conclusions people draw about geography).

Following CNNi for best day was The Five, Hannity, Kelly, and Colbert.  Following Kelly for best hour was Hayes, Morning Joe, Ed Show, and Hannity. A quiet day for Sean, who is normally #1 for the day and #2 for the hour!

Thanks to Taylor Swift, Ronan Farrow wins Cable News Twitter on Wednesday, October 8, 2014

One of the weaknesses reporting Twitter metrics for Cable News shows is that there’s no bright line between cable news related tweets and those that have nothing to do with cable news.  Such was the case on Wednesday, when Taylor Swift sent this tweet:

Look who she mentions!

Look who she mentions!

That one tweet generated (at the time of writing) 8,800 retweets, which was enough to put Ronan Farrow into first place for both his hour and the whole day.

Is this meaningful? Is this reasonable? Not really, but it’s only a bit worse than Sean Hannity whose hours of radio broadcasts generate tweets that are counted for his Fox News show.

After Farrow, the best hour winners were Kelly, Colbert, Hannity, and Hayes.  After Farrow, the best day winners were CNNi, Kelly, Hannity, and Colbert.

Kelly wins Cable News Twitter on Monday, October 6, 2014

I guess Piers Morgan didn’t do the trick for Hannity, as The Kelly File was still able to top Sean for best hour, leaving him with his usual best day.  (To be fair, though, I didn’t include tweets that only mentioned Piers, which could have tipped the scales).

Richard Lui wins Cable News Twitter on Sunday, October 5, 2014

This one’s a bit interesting: Richard Lui, who was anchoring the 3pm hour of news on MSNBC Sunday, won Cable News Twitter yesterday with the best hour.  The best day overall was had by CNN International.  Following Lui was Parts Unknown, both hours of Kornacki, and HBO’s Last Week Tonight:

As you can see, Lui and Bourdain were pretty much in a league of their own in terms of Twitter engagement.  It’s also interesting to see how well Last Week Tonight is engaging: the two HBO shows that are “news” (Real Time with Bill Maher and John Oliver’s LWT) both do fairly well.
