Well, that was unexpected. Chris Hayes got the most mentions during a show, while the Colbert Report got the most mentions during the day. MSNBC had the most mentions overall. Of the regular news networks, HLN had the highest female viewership, while CNN nosed past Fox news to get the male viewers. Maybe they should rename their networks: CNN blue and CNN pink? Or CNN Mars and CNN Venus? I think it could work…

E! News had another good day in Twitter mentions, but not good enough to come close Piers Morgan and Sean Hannity, the second and first place winners in total tweets during the day. For tweets during a broadcast, MSNBC’s The Ed Show took its usual top position. And while that’s usually enough to propel MSNBC to first place in the overall network counts, Hannity;’s strong showing put Fox News over the top on Wednesday.

Way to go, E! News, for winning the day — and the Ed Show for winning most mentions during a broadcast.
I’ve added a new feature as of today’s report: A breakdown in counts by network. This is a count of all mentions of all news shows, regardless of what day the show originally airs on. So, for example, you see HBO listed; the only HBO show I include is Real Time with Bill Maher (it’s newsy enough). Even though it’s not playing today (well, it plays any time people want to see it, I guess), it still got 589 mentions.
It’s kind of sad that HLN manages to come in behind Comedy Central and E!, but that’s what happens when you don’t really make an effort at social media.

Who Tweets to Cable News Shows?
If you look at the overall volume of tweets that mention cable news shows, it’s clear that there’s a lot of chatter going on. But who are all these people? How engaged are they? Are they people who casually mention a show once and then never again, or are they engaged in a conversation with and about cable news shows?
To answer these kinds of questions, I analyzed all tweets mentioning cable news shows over the span of a four week period. During that period, approximately 600,000 distinct Twitter screen names tweeted over 2 million messages that mentioned either a show or a host — a little over three tweets per user, on average.

Cable News Twitter Ratings for Monday, September 23, 2013
It’s a break in the normal Ed and Piers day on Social Media: Chris Hayes and Piers Morgan are the winners of Social Media. Chris with the most tweets during a show, and Piers with the most tweets throughout the day.
I had noticed last week that Totally Biased w/ W. Kamau Bell was giving an incorrect hashtag on the screen (#TotallyBiase, with the terminal d cut off), so I updated my search to include the incorrect hashtag too. I had hoped that would snap a big collection of tweets, but alas, there’s not a lot of live tweeting that show. I don’t know if it’s just their being on FXX, which is just getting established, or their being taped like the Daily Show and Colbert. Let’s hope over time they get better Twitter engagement.
