Trending Topics for Cable News on Tuesday, January 14, 2014 — Emoji and #TheCycle

Cable News Trending Topics for 2014-01-14

There’s a lot of interesting details in the trending topics for yesterday, but probably the most strange is that the hashtag #TheCycle was the most used of any cable new show’s. You can see this in the hourly stats:

2014 01 15 thecycle

At first this might seem to be grounds for congratulations, but it turns out that thousands upon thousands of them were retweets or variations on this tweet:

I feel fairly confident in saying that this emoji art is not in response to the show — and it’s not spam.  It’s just a random, very popular message that overloaded the hashtag for the show.  This is an example of why it’s hard to get perfect statistics from Twitter, and why you need to look deeper at times into what is really happening when something unusual is taking place…

You can see how The Cycle performed in its time slot and the rest of the results for Cable News in the hourly detailed ratings. Otherwise, continue on for the top trending topics…

Cable News Trending Topics for 2014-01-13

You have to love the world-wide influence Piers Morgan has on Twitter. But I don’t have to love how hard it is to disentangle his world-wide mentions from his domestic ones.  That problem surfaced today when Cristiano Ronaldo won FIFA’s player of the year award, the Ballon d’Or, beating out the previous winner, Lionel Messi.

Words and hashtags related to this event swamped the mentions of US cable news shows and personalities, particularly Mr. Morgan, giving an unusually worldly feel to the Twitter conversation.

Monday also welcomed Thomas A. Roberts to MSNBC’s Way Too Early, and Alex Wagner to take over Martin Bashir’s old 4pm slow, although neither managed to get into the trending topics.

Melissa Harris-Perry is the top trender in Cable News for Sunday, January 12, 2014

When you look at Tweets that mention cable news shows, MSNBC’s Melissa Harris-Perry was the top show, her #nerland the top hashtag (beating out #goldenglobes — but only in the context of a cable news show, to be fair).  And “People” was the most popular word.

As with Saturday, Chris Christie has dropped way down in the mentions.  Perhaps Monday will come with some new revelations, but I suspect that it’s going to be a long while before he perks back up in the news.

You can see the detailed hour-by-hour, show-by-show ratings in my detailed analysis.

Cable News Trending Topics for Saturday, January 11, 2014 — Christie who?

Chris Christie got a break on Saturday as he dropped almost off the trending topics list, lost in a hash of various conversations.  Taking his place was Piers Morgan, who generates controversy the way a cat generates purrs.

The most popular show for the day was the Melissa Harris-Perry show, whose 11am hour generated well above normal mentions.
