While Bill Maher won the best hour of the day, there were no real dominant topics trending during the day. Thursday’s “#myrightwingbiracialfamily” was in the top 100 hashtags, but dropped far out of the top 10, confirming my prediction that it would quickly lose luster.
As explained in the detailed ratings for the day, a tweet from MSNBC that implied right wingers are racially intolerant dwarfed all other news items in terms of discussion around cable news shows. The top shows for the day were actually conversation about the network, not any particular show.
Of course, the #myrightwingbiracialfamily hashtag’s dominance is very predictable in what passes for political debate this country: one side seizes upon some bit of stupidity on the other side to gloat and express their own superiority, virtue, and victimhood.
And, of course, there will shortly arise a new outrage du jour and this will fade. But for a brief glorious moment, bi-racial right wing families stepped into the spotlight

You probably aren’t surprised that the State of the Union address was the dominant topic on Twitter for cable news. But you might be surprised what network dominated the talk: Fox News. The hosts of “The Five” managed to garner almost half of all mentions, for Fox News, and the Fox News Channel managed to get about 25% more mentions than MSNBC did.

Two very unusual things happened on Monday. First, MSNBC managed to pull into first place ahead of CNN, which almost always sits in first place. Second, hashtags related to the Ukrainian crisis dominated the conversation, with 3 of the top 4 tags being related to events in that country. It may be that protests there are starting to move toward the top of the news. We’ll see how it goes…

The Ed Show was just a few mentions short of All In for a virtual tie for first place. See how all the cable news shows ranked yesterday.
Although it wasn’t a cable news show, the Grammys still managed to be the dominate topic when discussing Cable News shows, courtesy of E! News. #Nerdland, the hash tag for the Melissa Harris-Perry show on MSNBC, managed to come in second, while her show was the most mentioned show during its broadcast as well as throughout the day. No other specific topics dominated the day.
